Kitesurfing
Lowestofts main beach
Lowestoft’s main beach works in winds from NNE to SSW. The tidal current can be pretty strong so we always ride wind against tide.
If it’s blowing from the NORTH, wind against tide will be HIGH TO LOW
The tidal current starts slowing around an hour before high or low so we can get out an hour earlier and not feel the tide pulling us downwind. If the wind’s onshore or if it’s blowing 25 knots plus, we can kite no matter the tide state.
There are a few obvious hazards here, the groynes, the pier and the signs on the beach. Stay away from the cliff and lifeguard hut. In the summer season we can’t use the main beach as there are far too many tourists for kiting to be safe.
There is a lot of free parking along the sea front. We normally park at Rectory Road or Pakefield road.
Kessingland
(The Hollies)
Kessingland beach works in winds from North to South. Like Lowestoft the tidal current can be pretty strong so we always ride wind against tide.
If the wind’s blowing from the SOUTH, wind against tide will be LOW TO HIGH.
If it’s blowing from the NORTH, wind against tide will be HIGH TO LOW.
The tidal current starts slowing around an hour before high or low so we can get out an hour earlier and not feel the tide pulling us downwind. If the wind’s onshore or if it’s blowing 25 knots plus, we can kite no matter the tide state.
There are not many hazards at this beach other than the cliff and the bird sanctuary that’s there in the summer months.
There is free parking available at the Hollies Campsite. All they ask of us is to pop into reception to let them know we plan on kitesurfing. If you need a gate code please ask at reception.
